Celebrate Summer’s Best Dessert at Wilmington’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream Festival at Rockwood Park

Summertime means that school’s out, the pools are open and everything’s just a little more laid back. And although the warmest season is associated with many different foods—barbeque, crabs and burgers among them—everyone’s favorite warm-weather cuisine is undeniably ice cream. There’s nothing more refreshing after spending a day in the hot sun than digging into a cold ice cream cone. And ice cream fans will jump for joy if they decide to attend Wilmington, Delaware’s happening Old Fashioned Ice Cream Festival at Rockwood Park.

At least eight dairies will be serving up their goods at this lively two-day event. Attendees should look forward to cool treats from local shops including Caffe Gelato, HyPoint, the Ice Cream Shop, Kilby Cream, Sweet Lucy’s, Tocumbo, UDairy Creamery and Vanderwende Farm Creamery. These eight creameries will go on to compete for title of “Best Sundae on Sunday.” A panel of chefs and food experts and festivalgoers will help choose the winner of this delicious battle.

But this massive festival isn’t just about ice cream. It’s also about showcasing the best of Wilmington. From June 28 to 29, Wilmington’s Rockwood Park will be filled with vendors selling food, crafts and other goods, craft beer and wine, local restaurants showcasing their goods, and creameries scooping out their delicious ice cream. Restaurants dishing out their plates include I Don’t Give a Fork, Santa Fe Mexican Grill, Caffee Gelato, Smokey’s Brick Oven Pizza and Fat Rick’s BBQ.

Families also will love what this festival has to offer them. They can look forward to seeing animals from the Brandywine Traveling Zoo and entertainment from the likes of Juggling Hoffman’s, Annie’s Menagerie and Mad Science. Adults will enjoy listening to live music from bands including No Stringz Attached, Durkan Brothers, and Kind of Creatures that will add to the lively festivities.

Festival hours are from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 29. Admission is $5 for adults and $1 for children under 12.
